On March 24, 2013, at approximately 12:46 hours, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 400 block of Circulo Montana reference to an unresponsive male subject. According to sheriff’s deputies, the reporting person, Alvaro Monteverde, had left his residence at around 07:30 hours, and when he returned home at 12:30 hours he found his neighbor’s horse wearing a saddle on his property. Mr. Monteverde thought it was strange so he went to check on his neighbor, Terrance Austin Schonert, (72 years-old) and advise him that the horse was loose. Mr. Monteverde tried calling but received no answer so he decided to go to the house and as he walked over he found Mr. Schonert lying on the ground bleeding and unresponsive. Upon investigation of the scene and further interviews conducted, it was revealed that Mr. Schonert was attempting to train or “break-in” his horse and it appeared that the horse came to an abrupt stop throwing Mr. Schonert forward over the horse. Mr. Schonert was taken to the Office of Medical Examiner’s in Tucson to determine a cause of death.
