On April 7, 2013 at approximately 1208 p.m., the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call advising of a paragliding accident that occurred at Las Cienegas National Conservation area. Sonoita-Elgin Fire personnel and sheriff's deptuies responed. According to sheriff’s deputies, the victim, Zach Orman, 28 years of age from Tucson Arizona, an assistant instructor with a paragliding organization, was attempting to land his glider when he encountered and was caught in a “dust devil”. Mr. Orman was violently thrown to the ground and severely injured. Mr. Orman was found unconscious and suffered from obvious broken bones. He was flown to University Medical Center for advance life support. Unfortunately, Mr. Orman succumbed to his injures.
