On March 09, 2013 at approximately 05:49 hours, a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a single motor vehicle rollover accident. Earlier that same morning, at around 05:47 hours, the sheriff's office received a call for service in reference to a gas leak at a residence on Paseo Mascota. According to the reporting party, there were young children inside who were unresponsive when the parents tried to wake them. Deputy Jorge Ainza, a six (6) year veteran of the sheriff's office was responding with his lights and siren activated, traveling east on Ruby Road just past the railroad tracks when he lost control of his vehicle and rolled over 3 1/2 times trapping him inside. Rio Rico Fire Department personnel arrived and due to the severity of the accident, needed 40 minutes to safely extract Deputy Ainza from the vehicle. He was flown to University Medical Center in Tucson for medical treatment. On the original gas leak call, everyone was safely evacuated and the young children were fine.
